ST MUNGO’S UNITED CHURCH – DIEPSLOOT

Diepsloot is a community of approximately 200 000 people, situated north of Johannesburg, about 17kms north of St Mungo’s in Bryanston. It is a mixture of squatter and RDP housing, with basic infrastructure, schools and services in place. The population is multi ethnic, consisting predominantly of South African and foreign migrants to this urban area. Like squatter townships, it suffers from all of the associated problems of poverty, joblessness, health and crime. There are however a number of NGO’s and churches working in the area.

St Mungo’s United Church in Bryanston is leading the project to build a church to serve this community which will consist initially of a multi purpose hall, ablution and kitchen facilities and a small manse, on its site on the western boundary of Diepsloot. These facilities will be ready for occupation in the fourth quarter of 2006. In the meantime, the Church operates from a large Marquee on the site and we also use the facilities of the school across the road.

WE SEEK:

  • An ordained minister who
  • Is probably 28 to 35 years old
  • Has some pastoral experience
  • Will live on site in Diepsloot
  • Speaks at least 2 of the main Black languages
  • Has strong leadership qualities and the passion, energy and commitment to get involved in service to the community

WE OFFER:

  • A salary of R5000 per month
  • A Manse
  • Car
  • Cell phone
  • Pension Fund and Medical Aid membership

Applicants will be interviewed by a Selection Committee consisting of members of the Diepsloot Church Council and of St Mungo’s Bryanston.

Applications including a CV should be sent to:

RANDPARK RIDGE UNITED CHURCH

(Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian)

requires the services of an ordained Presbyterian or Congregational minister who would have special responsibility for, but not necessarily required to lead, the children’s and youth ministries, the contemporary worship service and have oversight of the office.  He/she would be a full member of the ministry team in all its diversity.  We would want this to be a long-term.

PROFILE

Randpark Ridge United Church was founded in 1975 under the Church Unity Commission of the South African Council of Churches.  It is a united ministry of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian denominations.  It was started to serve an area where housing development was taking place on smallholdings.  The church has grown to a membership of around 700.  The church stands on a property of 3.5 hectares, of which about a third is currently in use.

The senior minister is Rev Les Green, who is a Methodist and serves as Superintendent of the Fourways Circuit of the Methodist Church.  He is currently finalising his M Th through the University of Pretoria.  Les has been in fulltime ministry since 1973.

Marion Main is a Presbyterian and is our Pastoral Assistant.  She has a Diploma in Ministry, is a qualified physiotherapist.

Gareth Beyers was our Youth Pastor and has just left the church to pursue a Masters in Theology at Columbia Theological Seminary in  Atlanta, USA.  Gareth is a Presbyterian Student of the Ministry.

The final member of our ministry team is Rev Quentin Smith, a retired Methodist minister.

The office is competently staffed by a secretary, a part time bookkeeper and a part time secretary for the Methodist Circuit activities.  There is a resident caretaker.

Randpark Ridge United Church serves a wide diversity of members.  There are 6 major retirement villages within a 5 Km radius of the church.  There are literally thousands of secure housing developments in the neighbourhood, many of them being starter homes for young marrieds.  There is a major high school and several private schools of increasing status.  The church is involved in planting a United Church in Cosmo City, a major new housing development to the North of Randburg.

We have three services every Sunday. A traditional service at 7:30, a family style service with a balanced mix of traditional and contemporary at 9:00 and a contemporary service at 18:30, which tends to draw more youth, but not exclusively.

The church governance is based on five pillars: evangelism, ministry, worship, discipleship and fellowship.  Add to this stewardship, plus segments in each portfolio for  youth, married with children, independent adults and retired people.  This produces a ministry matrix which does not allow us to neglect any ministry in any segment of the community we serve.

The church is known for its friendly and caring spirit.  We have an annual mission within the church and are involved in church planting missions in other African countries.  There is a wide diversity of activities in the church and during the 40 Days of Community programme have found that well over 200 people are actively involved in the work and witness of the church.

The Council has analysed the staffing needs in the light of Gareth’s departure and is seeking an ordained Presbyterian or Congregational minister who would have special responsibility for, but not necessarily required to lead, the children’s and youth ministries, the contemporary worship service and have oversight of the office.  He/she would be a full member of the ministry team in all its diversity.  We would want this to be a long-term commitment.

Enquiries through the Church Co-ordinator: Derek Weston. 082 444 9321.
